A Letter From The President

Dear Circulation Friends,

Time has flown by since we were together in Lake George. I trust everyone is having a great summer using all the super ideas from the conference.

Wow! What a great conference. So many people worked so hard to make it all come together. I would like to take this opportunity to again thank everyone for attending and contributing with ideas, resources and time. Especially, I would like to thank Will Kustyn, for the effort and energy that he gave NYSCMA in 1999-2000. On behalf of all our members, Will a special thanks to you and Lisa.

Our 84th Conference gathered together over 100 Empire State members to focus on the future of newspapers. Association members, representing paid Daily/Sunday newspapers ranging in size from 5,000 to 2,000,000 subscribers, shared ideas and concerns affecting our industry. Reports from John Murry from NAA and ken Shultz from ABC looked at possible changes in the future. The updates explained how we may be leveling the playing field with proposals regarding how "Base Price" and paid subscribers eligibility may change. Other key speakers were Mike Huot, Vice President of Circulation from Louisville, who spoke on retention, Bonnie Christian on team building, and Don Waterman, the Corporate Circulation Director of the Ottaway Newspapers, who explained the importance of relationships in your Single Copy future.

Carleton Rosenburg, Senior Vice President of Gannett Newspaper Division, was presented with the J. Truman Kahler award. Also at our banquet Bonnie Christian, Customer Service Director from The Journal News received the Charles J. Latus award.

Mark your calendars for May 6th through May 9, 2001, when we will be in the Baseball Center of the World, Cooperstown. Yes, plans are underway to have our NYSCMA Sales Conference opening reception at the baseball Hall of fame with access during the conference for additional visits (no skipping out on sessions).

We will be staying at the Otesaga Resort Hotel and will continue to keep you posted as the line up of presenters unfold.

Please call me or any of the board members or committee chair people with your comments or suggestions for 2000-2001 training sessions, conference or anything else about which you like to chat.

Hope you had a great Summer!

Best Regards,

Claudia Hartz
President, NYSCMA
